the Apotheosis of Rainbow Dash

Description

So, I've been working on this for a loooooong time. Originally I got the idea from reading "the Lost Symbol", and finding a lovely illustration of the "Apotheosis of Washington". This was right around the same time I started getting into My Little Pony, and so I combined the two.

And so Rainbow Dash has reached 20% cooler.

I've never worked on a pic this...complex before. This has the most characters ever in one of my pics, at a grand total of 9. add in clouds, background, lighting, and I was in for hell. The sketches alone took a week to finish. I tried to give it a feel like old fresco's and Renaissance paintings. Finding a single color to shade everyone was hard enough, but I settled on a weird brownish color. Sadly, it was too late for I didn't find the color until after I finished shading RD, so...yeah. That's why she looks weird. Also..Celestia's mane..how can something so colorful and voluminous be so menacing!? It's like animators are purposly trying to give fanartists a hard time. :fear:

To clear some things up, Dash isn't becoming a god, like the definition of Apotheosis means. She's just becoming protector of the skies or something. Also, I know Luna looks too dark. I know, I tried to fix it, but...meh. And certain proportions are lost. This pic involved five seperate sketches compiled into one, so certain proportions are bound to be off.

And now I'm rambling. Anyway, enjoy the pic. ^^

EDIT:

Just fixed the pic up a bit so it's more balanced. :)
EDIT 2:

Thank you so much everyone for over 400 faves!!!!! :faint:

EDIT 3:

Thanks guys, I now know the banner should say "Meus Parvum Equus", and that I'll never use an online translator for Latin again. Seriously though, I'll try to remember when I re-paint this in the Summer (which I fully plan on doing).

I was just going to respond to Whitestar1802's "You Like?", but I ended up typing so much, I figured I'd just make a critique out of it.

First off, I love how you did their faces and wings. In fact, muzzles, wings, hair, ears, and eyes (in that order) are what I ALWAYS look at first. Their hair and coat detail are perfect for this style, so there's no problem there. I love that we get different angles on different aspects of this style due to the nature of the work. Blah blah, it looks fantastic, I don't want to echo LingeringSentiments.

MY ONLY COMPLAINT: As I said in my reply to LingeringSentiments, the bodies look a tad thin. I always seem to find something to complain about, and the only reason I'm pointing this out is because it's the ONLY thing I notice. It all looks excellent except the body shapes, which just looks great. Every detailed pony work that had bodies that impressed me had a bit more tummy. These bodies just don't look as realistic. It's especially noticeable on Twilight where you can see the lack of curve along her rib cage This could be out of personal preference, and I'm so impressed by their faces, wing size/shape, horns, and legs, that I can't give less than 5/5 for technique.

This may be one of few things I actually download from this site, but I really wish their bodies didn't look lanky. Again, it's not that noticeable, but compared to how well everything else was done- it's actually frustrating to see something so close to humanly perfect but have one odd thing...

Before I link examples of well-made mid-sections, I'd like to reiterate how amazing everything else is. I've spent most of this critique rambling about one little thing. The faces are incredible, the chests have shape and don't make from their tail to their head look like a curved sausage, the wings are perfectly sized AND detailed well, their body LENGTH is spot on, their eyes are shaped and colored very well, and the shading is perfect (to a non-artist's eye, so don't quote me on that).

Wow, this turned out really long... Anyway, here are examples of slightly better mid-sections:

[link] - Twilight's body and horn look perfect here. The only reason I like others more is because I can't see her face.
[link] - Although I think her body looks a bit short here, the roundness of her mid-section is well done.
[link] - This work has the body and chest shape just right. I don't know what I think of the rest of it though...
